Living Word – July 2012

Dear reader, we wish to continue with the subject regarding the text from John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” We wish to reflect on the second point: Jesus is the truth. Jesus spoke to his disciples letting them know what the final destination of their journey, what would happen with them at the end. In addition, He explains how they will arrive at this destination when He says that He is the way. Now following this He says that He is the truth. This is very important since it provides insurance, a signature to His words.

Jesus wants to make it clear that His words are true, that there is no variation in Him. The dictionary says that the truth is a fact or a belief that is accepted as true. That it is something that cannot be denied within reason. This tells us that Jesus let us know when He says that He is the truth; that there is no rational way to deny who Jesus is, the son of God, the only way to the Father. Let’s meditate on this for a moment; in a time when the truth has become relative, where what is true depends on the opinion or point of view of who is saying it, Jesus makes it clear that there is no doubt about who He is. This is very important because it gives us the confidence that we can trust in His word, in Him without fear or doubt. But at the same time it makes it clear that He is still who He is even if I don’t believe, because it doesn’t depend on me. Jesus is the son of God that gave his life so that we could have the opportunity to receive salvation.

In John 5:33 Jesus says “You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.” John gave testimony of the truth which is Jesus. Jesus did not witness about himself because He didn’t want to glorify himself, even though He was entitled to but John did witness about Him. When is said in John 8:32 that we will know the truth and the truth will set us free, it means that by knowing Jesus, then we will be free. In John 18:37 Jesus says that everyone who is of the truth hears His voice, this is everyone that belongs to Him. And we belong to Jesus from the moment we believed in Him.

We can completely trust in Jesus without doubt, without fears because He is truth. We can place our burdens, our doubts, our fears in Him because He loves us and gave His life for us.

May God bless your lives.
