Linda DeStefano and her husband, Dr. Richard Weiskopf, were in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery at the time of the crash. The couple were walking away from their friend’s burial when they were hit by a car in the 900 block of Jamesville Avenue.

DeStefano, of the town of Onondaga, died shortly after the crash. She was 76 years old.

It was an accident, not a hit-and-run crash, said Walter Weiskopf, DeStefano’s stepson. Although Syracuse police are still investigating the accident, Weiskopf said his family doesn’t expect any charges will be filed.

Dr. Weiskopf, DeStefano’s husband, suffered minor injuries in the crash. The couple would’ve celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this fall. DeStefano was a well-known member of Syracuse’s activist community. She spent decades advocating for animal rights, environmental protection and social justice.
