Yoga: What is Yoga? Part 1

What is Yoga?

The word yoga means “union” in the language of ancient India (where yoga originated). Think of the union occurring between your mind, body & spirit. Yoga encompasses a broad field; the specific type of yoga that we usually see around us refers to Hatha Yoga–the practice of physical postures or poses.

What are various feelings that you experience throughout the day? Hatha Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength & flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits.

The poses can be done: –quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement, exercising the cardio-vascular muscles & burning calories. –or more slowly to increase stamina, perfect the pose & calm the mind.

How do your feelings affect your body in as physical sensations?

Demands & stresses cause many of us to rush around, burying or sweeping aside our inner feelings & thoughts. During Yoga class we access greater awareness to ourselves.

“Strip away the…conditions & somewhere deep down inside you are still there…you find out who you really are. With greater awareness comes the sensitivity & skill to find & remove the…blocks that often keep us from our true selves. Yoga gives us control of ourselves. It helps cut through the layers of mis-identities that arise in response to our actions, experiences & feelings. It calms the frenzy, clears the clutter & allows us to get back in touch with ourselves.” John Tunney, Certified Yoga Teacher
